From its beginnings to the early 1960s, La Jolla was marketed by developers as a bastion of isolation and exclusivity. Antisemitichousing practices began in 1926 with the development of La Jolla Shores,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and continued from the 1920s through about 1970.[25] In La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Hermosa, only people with pure European ancestry could own property (this excludes Jews, who were not considered "white"), and housing notices included racist comments against Jews and other minority groups. Housing restrictions were thought to be enough to keep "undesirable" ethnic groups from living in La Jolla, until the 1948 Supreme Court case Shelley v. Kraemer prohibited such restrictive covenants. After the ruling, real estate companies used less obvious tactics to keep Jewish people out of La Jolla. Real estate agents would be fired if they sold a house to Jewish clients. There were no for-sale signs put up on properties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], requiring the prospective buyer to go to a real estate office to find out what was available. If an agent suspected that a potential home buyer was a Jew, they would demand higher down payments and display green cards on their dashboards marked with the Star of David to warn the seller.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] The sellers would also send codes to their real estate agents; if their porch lights were on during the day, they did not want Jewish buyers.[26]
In 2003 a writer for the San Diego Jewish Journal reported, "When world-renowned British mathematician/philosopher Jacob Bronowski was brought to the Salk Instituteby Jonas Salk in 1963, he wanted to buy a piece of land on La Jolla Farms Road for the purpose of building a house for his family. But the land was part of William Black's Beach and Bridle Club, and the Bronowskis were required to produce three written character references." The family produced letters from members ofParliament.
Coloured woodcut first appeared in ancient China. The oldest known colored woodcuts are three Buddhist images dating back to the 10th century. European woodcut prints with coloured blocks were invented in Germany in 1508 and are known as chiaroscuro woodcuts (see below). However colour did not become the norm, as it did in Japan, in the ukiyo-e and other forms.
In Europe and Japan, colour woodcuts were normally only used for prints rather than book illustrations. In China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] where the individual print did not develop until the nineteenth century, the reverse is true, and early colour woodcuts mostly occur in luxury books about art, especially the more prestigious medium of painting. The first known example is a book on ink-cakes printed in 1606, and colour technique reached its height in books on painting published in the seventeenth century. Notable examples are the Treatise on the Paintings and Writings of the Ten Bamboo Studio of 1633, and the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual published in 1679 and 1701.
